Just Because You’re Hot…
Someone needs to tell some Hollywood folk that just because you’re hot doesn’t mean you should make music. Hayden Panettiere, who admittedly is one of the hottest young women in Hollywood, is the perfect example.
Don’t get me wrong, Hayden is definitely hot, and she’s got a good voice. But it takes more than being attractive and a good voice in the music world. Maybe if she did some generic Disney-esque pop, or some Ashlee Simpson punk pop, it would work. I’d actually love to hear it. But this one, well… All I can say is Hayden needs a “Wake Up Call” herself if she truly wants to be a pop star.
Lady GaGa–Not a One Hit Wonder?
Is Lady GaGa more than just a one-hit-wonder? With “Just Dance” still topping the iTunes charts, Lady GaGa seems to have surpassed the normal staying-time of a pop single. But is there more to GaGa? Try out “Poker Face”, another pop song with an awesome dance beat.
“Poker Face” is similar enough to “Just Dance” that it’s fairly obvious that the two come from the same artist, but it also has a different enough sound that it doesn’t sound like there’s some machine out there churning out the same song–a problem some dance pop artists face. “Poker Face” is definitely worth the few minutes listening, and I’d suggest the $0.99 for an iTunes purchase. Lady GaGa’s proven she’s here to stay with this song. Let’s hope her next album can bring another couple of dance pop hits.
Fearless?
After listening to Taylor Swift’s album repeatedly over the last month, I’ve come to one conclusion–Taylor Swift isn’t actually ‘fearless’. Ok, so she gets up on stage regularly, gives amazing performances like the one on “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” (who else would be out doors sans sleaves in weather below twenty degrees? Not the Jonas Brothers, that’s for sure), but is she really fearless?
Of the thirteen songs–all of which are excellent, by the way–on her latest album, how many are not about one of her many boyfriends? True, it was her boy troubles that made “Should’ve Said No”, “Teardrops on my Guitar”, “Tim McGraw”, “Picture to Burn”, and “Our Song” hits, but does Taylor have anything going on in her life other than relationships? Don’t get me wrong, I love Taylor Swift and her music, but perhaps a better title would be “Afraid of Nothing… Except a Long-Lasting Relationship”.
I’m Late!
Sorry about the lack of updates! I’m in the middle of moving! Things should be back up and running on Wednesday, so expect more then!
I Heart Twitter
Oh, I know, I’m such a dork, but I have fallen in love with Twitter. It seems really stupid, but Twittering is so fun! Check it out!
I’d love to tweet with y’all if you have a Twitter!
For those of you without Twitter… You are missing out. I will be putting up content only available on Twitter—mostly because I want each blog post (with a few exceptions) to be meaningful, and my tweets will be more entertaining. I’ll try my best to keep my Twitter music-oriented, but with a more personal spin on it. Whether it’s my new obsession with Selena Gomez or another blogger’s interesting post, it will be on Twitter.
Now, go follow me!
How Does TV Do It?

I am constantly amazed at televsion’s ability to take a decent song and, by placing it correctly in the show, make the song sound really good.
Let’s start with Gossip Girl. For a complete listing of the songs from each episode of Gossip Girl, check out the official website here. The first song I would like to mention: “Google Me” by Teyana Taylor. Now, the title of the sound is great. Nice, creative, to the point. And the song has its moments, but in the end, the beat is the only thing that makes this song worth a listen. There’s an interesting music video for it on YouTube here.
And then there’s Shwayze. I’m not the biggest fan of the whole beachy music thing, but Shwayze’s definitely original, mixing beach pop with rap. Not that I call myself a fan. Anyway, check out “Buzzin” by Shwayze, which was featured in Gossip Girl, here.
Sadly, The CW does not have the 90210 music listed. I expected they would. Perhaps we will see that come up later this week. Until then.
xoxo, Gossip Girl Wesley
Stalk Me
Yes, you can now stalk Poptastique’s blogger Wesley (yes, I am referring to myself in third person, is that OK with you?). Not really, but you can follow him (3rd person pronouns, too?) around on YouTube, Last.fm, and various other sites.
Over the next few weeks I will be adding more sites where you can follow my music-related activities.
Check the right-hand side for the “Track Me” section!
Jonas Mania Brings Bonus Mania
A large portion of pop fans already own a copy of A Little Bit Longer. Billboard says more than 200,000 copies were sold the day of release and estimates that after one week around 700,000 copies will be sold. Those numbers should come out soon and I’ll post about sales when an official count is released.
The question on many minds: which one do I get? And for far more: why didn’t my CD come with that bonus track? The answers are tough. WalMart, Target, and BestBuy each have the CD with an exclusive bonus track. WalMart shoppers get “Live to Party”; Target buyers get “Hello Goodbye”, a cover of the Beatles song featured in Target commercials; and BestBuy purchases contain “Out of This World”.
So which do you buy? Nobody wants to miss out on a good pop song, but your only legal option is to buy three copies of the CD for roughly $28 (around $10 at WalMart and BestBuy, $7.99 at Target). Who wants to do that? No way I would pay an aditional $18 – $20 for two songs. I’m rather upset with Hollywood Records. I understand the desire to make an additional profit off the CD, but to have multiple exclusive bonus tracks spread out over three retail stores is absurd. From an economic standpoint, they probably made the right choice. But they certainly have one upset fan.
Welcome to Poptastique
Welcome to Poptastique! After a desperate attempt to find some new pop music and read about what others think of the latest pop music, I was left unusually disappointed. Never before have I had so much trouble finding a blog! And so here we are!
Poptastique is here for me to vent about the latest in pop music. But there’s so much more! I’ll dredge up some classics–and by classics I mean Aly & AJ goodies along with the true classics Cher and Dolly Parton–in hopes of helping you find something you missed years ago. I’ll do my best to find rising stars in the pop world. And I’ll let you help me out! Think I’m totally off? Let me know! Have I missed something? Post a comment! I am completely open to your opinion and feedback.
